Today's Avon Lady Tip is from John - who has never been an Avon rep, or used Avon of any kind! Here is John's tip:
"Dear Birdie,
I want to add a helpful tip to your growing sales advice column.
As the sales manager of a BMW dealership, I often meet with men and women who have many questions they want answered before they are ready to make a purchase. I see too many new salespeople interrupt their potential customers in order to handle an objection. They think they are being smart, but they are, in fact, turning off their customer.
If your customer - whether it's for a high-end BMW or an inexpensive lipstick - has something to say, just take your time and listen. Wait until your customer is finished speaking before you voice any portion of your sales pitch."

I have a new series of FREE e-Books for Avon Representatives and Customers. e-Books are great - you can print it out just like a regular book and read it at your leisure.
My first e-Book is:
Does that Avon Product Work?
One Avon Lady’s Opinions
On Avon’s Best-Selling Products
…and two funny stories, too!
You can download the e-Book here.
This FREE e-Book can be a great help to potential and new recruits, Avon Reps, and Avon customers. Does that Avon Product Work? contains the reviews of Avon's most popular - and expensive - products. Instead of guessing what might happen if you slather a cream across your delicate skin, check to see if the product is reviewed in this fun reference manual. Of course, all opinions are mine alone.
Does That Avon Product Work? also has a funny David Letterman-style Top Ten List, and the story of how I took down a tree rat using Avon hair mousse!
Yes! Share it! It's FREE! Spread it around! Please feel free to post it up for free dowload at your own website, too! If you do post it for download, a link back to my site would be wonderful.
I have also written another FREE e-Book: 50 Ways to Leave Your Number. Check it out!
Even though this e-Book is completely free to download AND distribute, if you enjoy my free e-Books and find them useful, I would be grateful for any donations you care to make to my PayPal account:
I wrote a story last month about grief, about a shamanic ritual I chose to deal with that grief. I posted it at TNB, and never posted the link here until today. Some of you found it, left me dear comments. I was worried about posting the link here, worried that I might be judged for the ceremony I chose, the danger of it, the illegality of it. I'm not so afraid now. I am human, a failure in many ways, someone who is always searching for meaning beyond the layer of skin that thinks it can hold my thoughts, my being.
I hope you enjoy it.

Good Housekeeping will be featuring one blogger each month, debuting with the May issue, in their new "Good Reads" section. I was the first blogger chosen! I am so excited to be a contributor to such a wonderful magazine. I have read Good Housekeeping since I was a kid and my mom had a subscription.

Today's Avon Lady Tip is from Drew, who is a brand-new Avon Representative in Thousand Oaks, California. Drew just placed her first order, which included over $200 in customer sales - AND she signed up two new reps! Way to go, Drew! Here's what Drew sent in:
"Dear Birdie,
I signed up to sell Avon because my husband was laid off of work three weeks ago after he had some health problems that caused him to miss several weeks of work. I am working full-time as a bank teller. There is already a coworker who sells Avon in the office, so I can't bring my brochures to work without causing a problem. I have such limited time, as I also have a little girl in the first grade. We need some extra cash to help get us through the next few months while my husband gets better and is looking for a new job.
My husband, Brian, is actually the one who came up with my idea. He has been at the unemployment office every day this week, looking for what new jobs are posted. I spent my lunch hour every day over the past two weeks at the unemployment office, too. I handed out brochures and samples to every person. I didn't care if they were a man or a woman. I had to get some extra brochures and samples from my upline since I went through my kit's books in the first day. I'm going to continue canvassing here. There are so many people laid off or looking for work. Avon is a great way to earn a little extra money while you look for another job. It's working for me, so why not anyone else?"

Patricia W., a woman who purchases Avon online, gave me her review of the mark Flip For It Spring Color Kit. Patricia attends grad school at the University of Michigan, where she is pursuing a Doctorate in Education.
Here's what Patricia wrote:
"Dear Birdie,
I just bought the mark Flip For It Spring Color Kit in the Paris Spring Color Kit color set, and it arrived yesterday. Honestly, I didn't expect much from it. I have purchased these types of all-in-one products in the past, and it has been hit and miss. As a full-time student who is interning at two inner city schools in addition to handling student teacher duties, I need products that work great on the go. I have had some great experience with Avon mark products in the past. I especially love the mark skin care items. The mark "Let's Be Clear" has done wonders for my acne-prone skin.
The compact has an elegant look. It is quite nice to hold in your hand. It feels just heavy enough to give you the idea of luxury, but it's not too heavy to drop in your purse. I chose the Paris collection since the earthy neutrals looked like they would match my complexion and my need for some simple non-attention seeking enhancement.
The colors are prettier in person than how they appear on my computer screen. They work well together, and they looked just great when I applied them to my skin and lips. I only have one small complaint. The lip color wears off much too quickly, and I find I need to apply it each time I visit the restroom. That's not a huge problem, but I would prefer something with a bit more staying power. The colors are nice."

Jess, a woman who purchases Avon from her sister-in-law, emailed me her review of the ANEW CLINICAL Line and Wrinkle Corrector. Jess explained that at age 52, she is looking for something to soften her crow's feet.
Here's what Jess wrote:
"Dear Birdie,
My sister is an Avon Rep, and she convinced me to try the ANEW CLINICAL Line and Wrinkle Corrector. At first she gave me a whole box of ten samples. She told me that she read your review before she tried it herself, and when she used it, one month later her eyes had less lines. She looks great. She's three years older than me, but she is starting to look a little younger. Well I can't have that can I?
I only applied the ANEW CLINICAL Line and Wrinkle Corrector to the lines around my eyes. I didn't want to use up all my samples in one week. I could honestly see a difference in two days. When I had two samples left I told my sister I would buy some. That was six months ago and my eyes are so much less lined than they were. I can't believe the difference. My husband noticed, too, and I didn't say anything to him beforehand. This is a miracle product."

I recently completed writing a memoir! Just as a teaser, I have posted the first two chapters (and no more!) at my Gather site. Yes, I have submitted my manuscript, and no, I ain't telling what's going on... yet! I hope to find a home for my book, and if you are a publisher and want to read a funny, humorous, touching, quirky, exciting memoir about an Avon Lady, email me!
Here's Chapter One
and
here's Chapter Two!
Brooke, a woman who purchases Avon in person from me, gave me her review of the Hello Tomorrow Ultra Color Rich Lipstick. Brooke bought the newly formulated lipstick in three shades - Latte, Buttered Rum, and Wineberry.
Here's what Brooke said:
"Birdie, this is my new favorite lipstick. I'm so glad Avon is having a 50% off sale on this, I'm going to order six more tubes from you. The color is incredible. It's the deepest richest color I've ever seen in a lipstick. I know I sound like a commercial, but I'm not kidding. It makes my lips look full and glamorous. The color is just something else. If you look closely, you can see this amazing variation in the color. It's like the colors you find in nature. They aren't all just one shade, it's a mix that looks so much more natural. It leaves my lips feeling softer, too."

Today's Avon Lady helpful tip is from Georgina, an Avon Representative in Austin, Texas:
"Birdie,
My tip is about recruiting. I recently made Unit Leader. I have had a lot of luck recruiting. I make a folder for each potential recruit. I put all of the regular recruiting literature in it, but I also add a booklet with your daily sales tips. I can't believe how much these make new reps feel like they can do Avon. A lot of new people find the recruiting literature to be a little intimidating, and a little home spun humor helps make them much more comfortable. Of course I credit you in my booklet and tell my new people to read your site every day. I think you should make a PDF file of all of the tips that Leadership reps can download and print out. Would you consider it?"

Erin Greenhill, who is an Avon Representative in Sherwood Park, AB, Canada, sent in this wonderful review of one of my personal favorite Avon products - the ANEW Transforming Hand and Nail Cream.
Here's what Erin wrote:
"Hi Birdie!
I've been an Avon Lady since last July...I've been discovering many wonderful products within AVON since joining!
The one that is truly changing my life is the ANEW Transforming Hand and Nail Cream. Once upon a time, I had gorgeous nails. Seriously. Never needed a French Manicure or polish, although polish was fun now and then. People often thought I had fake nails, but looked closer and realized they were all real!
Then I had a baby. After a year of hand washing all of her bottles/nipples, spoons, bowls, etc. and hand washing all my hardwood floors, my nails disintegrated one at a time.
Eventually, I was left with 3/10 that didn't fall apart, but the rest were a mess. I would file them, polish, use any and all products made for strengthening nails. It was futile, and I probably spent about $500 on stuff that did not work.
I got my demo of the ANEW product, and thought, "Here we go again" but had to try it anyway. Due to the price, I thought I would just use it before bed.
Within the first week, I wasn't filing, trimming, picking on my hands. Three weeks after that, I realized that my nails had not only grown quite a bit, but the nailbed itself was growing back!! For the first time in 5 years, I have white on the ends of all 10 of my fingernails!!
I'm currently awaiting my C11 order, which includes a few tubes of the best hand cream on earth! I'll have enough in stock to justify using it all the time, all day, every day! As far as price goes, this product is worth the regular price, and I'll be doing a little dance of joy every time it goes on sale! :D
Thanks from someone who will have gorgeous hands again sometime within another month!"

Sheila, an Avon customer in NYC sent in this review of the Avon Naturals Cucumber Melon Body Lotion:
Here's what Sheila wrote:
"Dear Birdie,
I have been buying Avon products for over thirty-five years. I rarely use anything else. I used to sell Avon but kept buying too many demo items and had to stop. My favorite products are the Anew Clinical Lift and Tuck, Glimmersticks, and Skin So Soft. But my most favorite product is the Naturals Cucumber Melon Body Lotion. I think if I knew it wouldn't harm me, I would drink it because it smells so good! I use it every morning after my shower and all day long I feel soft, fresh, and I smell great. I have had coworkers ask me what my "signature scent" is, and they don't believe me when I tell them it is an inexpensive body lotion. I like that the lotion has natural ingredients, too. My skin really has never looked better. If Avon even thinks about discontinuing this product, I will lead a hunger strike!"

Edith, an Avon customer who buys her Avon through the Avon.com site and doesn't have a representative, sent in this review of the ANEW ALTERNATIVE Intensive Eye Cream:
Here's what Edith wrote:
"Dear Birdie,
I have to tell you that I was afraid to spend $25 on the new Avon Anew Alternative Intensive Eye Cream. I had some serious dark circles and was getting to the point where I hated looking in the mirror each morning. I would have to apply two layers of under-eye concealer to look even semi-normal. I'm sure I am being picky, but I just didn't feel good about myself with these under-eye bags, puffiness, and dark circles.
I used to use the Avon beComing Pack Your Bags product and found it to be reasonably good, and once it was discontinued I just couldn't find anything else that worked at all. The Anew Clinical Eye Lift didn't do a thing for me. When I saw the ad for the Anew Alternative Intensive Eye Cream, I decided to invest the $25.
The product has a strong smell, but this is my only fault with it. It feels nice when I apply it each morning and evening. Within a week or so, the dark circles looked remarkably lighter, and my puffiness had completely abated. I am absolutely thrilled with this product and feel that the price is extremely fair. A little goes a long way, and it really does work wonders."

Today's Avon Lady helpful tip is from Ronda, an Avon Representative in Paris, Texas:
"Birdie,
Around here, some of the restaurants have those drawings for a fee lunch. You have to drop your business card in a fishbowl or can, and one card a week is drawn. I drop my card in every restaurant's bowl, but I tape two samples on it so that it will get looked at, and on the back I write:
I don't want the free lunch, I want to treat YOU instead!
I get calls every week from these business cards! I hope this helps other reps, I just love your site."

I will have a full story about the new Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund sometime soon, but in the meantime, if you are a woman with a dream of changing the world, apply for one of the $5,000 weekly awards to be given during the next 52 weeks.
Accompanying the Hello Tomorrow Fund program is a series of new advertisements - print, online, and television - that highlight Avon as an exciting career choice as well as focus on the positive aspects of aging. Have you seen any of the ads? What do you think? I'd love your input before I write my article. I will post this query at the new Beauty Dish Coffeehouse as well.

Today's Avon Lady helpful tip is from Trini, an Avon Representative who just made Unit Leader in Miami.
"I was still afraid to go door to door or to speak to strangers, and as a stay-at-home mom with a six month old boy and a two year old girl, I don't get out often enough to make new friends. I didn't think I could ever make Unit Leader when I started Avon a few months ago. I made up my mind I was going to do it, and I figured out a way to get potential Avon Reps to come to me. I remember that the hospital gave me a gift basket filled with samples of baby lotions, formula samples, and smoothie mixes as well as some literature and coupons from businesses around town. I found out who put those baskets together and made an arrangement to give them Avon samples and a letter. I printed the letter on nice parchment paper I bought at Office Depot. I rolled them up like a fancy scroll and tied a pink and blue ribbon around them. The letter said:
Dear New Mom,
Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby! As a new mom myself, I know how hard it is to make friends and to find time to pamper yourself. I am starting a group of new moms who want to make some extra money and who want to connect with other new moms in the neighborhood. Give me a call when you are feeling rested and strong, and I will make sure that you get some more Avon samples to enjoy while you are enjoying your new precious bundle.
Birdie, I made Unit Leader in just three weeks! I also made a lot of new friends with new babies!"

Kris, an Avon Rep in Tennessee who just celebrated her third anniversay with Avon, sent in this review of the brand-new Avon Moisture Therapy Skin Bump Minimizer Lotion:
Here's what Kris wrote:
"Hi Birdie! I'm an Avon Rep in Tennessee. I just had my third anniversary with Avon. Here's my experience with the Moisture Therapy Skin Bump Minimizer Lotion.
I was SO excited to see the new lotion Avon was offering to minimize the mystery bumps on the backs of my arms and legs. It promises "With exfoliating glycolic and salicylic acids. Gentle exfoliators help the appearance of bumps on the backs of arms and legs. In just one week, flaky skin texture is improved. Suitable for sensitive skin.
I have done everything to get rid of these bumps: moisturized, exfoliated, loofahed 'til I can loofah no more! I thought I would be stuck with these bumps forever. I ordered three bottles and impatiently waited for my order to come.
The next day after my shower, I put a bit on my arms and legs and went about my business for the day. That night, I was shocked to feel that the bumps were already almost gone! After a few more days of inconsistent use, my arms are as smooth as a baby's bottom! I will continue to use this product. I'm so excited that I don't have to be embarrassed about wearing sleaveless tops or a bathing suit this year.
Now, if I could do something about the lumps that hang around my arms and legs when I'm trying to get things done...
P.S. I love the Skin Fusions, too!"

Lorna, an Avon Rep in Elberton, Georgia, sent in this review of the brand-new ANEW BEAUTY Age-Transforming Foundation SPF 15:
Here's what Lorna wrote:
"I have been using ANEW BEAUTY Age-Transforming Foundation SPF 15 in the Mahogany color for a little over a month since I received the demo. As a black woman, I often have trouble matching foundation to my skin tone. I love this foundation. The Mahogany is a great match for my skin, and the ANEW BEAUTY Age-Transforming Foundation SPF 15 smooths over all my tiny imperfections. It is improving the quality of my skin every day, too. I can tell that my skin is more smooth and even, and I have been getting a lot of compliments on my complexion. Ever since the beComing line disappeared at Avon, I have been looking for a new foundation that I like. This is it. I will recommend it to all my customers."

Anna Centofani, an Avon Rep in Chelsea, Michigan, sent in this thoughtful, fun, and comprehensive review of the Avon Anew Clinical Plump & Smooth Lip System:
Here's what Anna wrote:
"Hi Birdie,
I received the Anew Clinical Plump & Smooth Lip System from Avon with my C4 order on Saturday Feb. 10. Avon's answer to at home lip injections...The product came as a "Preferred Preview" package, as it will not make it's debut until the C7 brochure. I have been eagerly awaiting for the arrival of this product. Over the years, Avon skin care products have treated my thirty something (maybe close to 40) face like royalty....holding at bay the fine lines and wrinkles that can magically appear from one glance to another. Though, I have noticed the once full lips I had were now deflating and a crease (or two) on my top lip were now appearing and staying there, of course uninvited. So, when I first read about the New Anew product you could not stop me from being one of the first to try it at any cost.
Once I dragged my boxes off the front porch and into the house I frantically opened each box until I saw the gray and white box. I opened it immediately to find a large looking gray and white pen shape applicator. I examined the "pen" trying to figure which side I should use around my lip and which one to use on my lips. It clearly states on the "pen": the white side is for around the lips, leaving the gray side to apply on the lips. This product gives hope of smoothing out deep vertical lines around the mouth while redefining lip contours and boost collagen for lips that are fuller, plumper and natural lip color is restored. Oh, I couldn't wait. Next I had to figure out how the "pen" works......I don't perform well reading directions, so I proceeded to uncap the white side of the "pen". OK, I said to myself, If I was to create this apparatus how would I release the magical potion inside...hmmmm...twist, yeah, but there is two ends to this "pen". In the middle of the "pen" the words slide appear. I slid the sleeve in the middle of the pen towards the gray side and twisted. I heard a series of clicking noises and the cream poked itself through a pinhead hole on the applicator tip. I smoothed the cream around my lips. I repeated the steps with the gray side forcing the cream into my lips. The package warns you may feel some "tingling" when first applied. I compare this to medicated blistex, which is very tolerable. Beauty is vain. The recommendations are to us in AM and PM. I have used this product for 2 nights and 2 mornings and I have noticed a difference. My creases around my lips have smoothed out and my lips do appear to be fuller. I have not noticed a color change as of yet, but I am going to give it time. I give this product two thumbs up and would recommend to my worst enemy (maybe)..
Creatively living life through Avon one day at a time....... Anna"
I love hearing from readers! I get, on average, three hundred emails a day - not counting spam mail. I can't keep up! I want to make sure everyone gets the answers and help they seek. So many new Avon Ladies write to me, wanting to know how to make their sales take off, wanting to know what techniques I've used to place those brochures in front of potential customers. Others just want to chit chat, to get to know me better, to share tidbits from their life.
I set up a new Beauty Dish Coffeehouse, a forum with "rooms" for discussion on Avon Sales Techniques, Avon Products, and a boudoir for readers of my personal blog where we can ask each other cheeky questions.
Please visit, and introduce yourself! It would be great to communicate with other Avon Reps, and to build a base of knowledge (outside of youravon.com and other official channels, where some reps feel uncomfortable posting "negative" opinions) that can help any rep - or anyone interested in becoming a rep. Folks who are not yet reps have no way of knowing what it's really like being an Avon Lady outside of Beauty Dish. Over time, I will add a series of FAQ's (frequently asked questions) that will help satisfy my enormous email load.
You need to register your username to post, but it's completely free, and it's fun!
See you at the forum!
Mark, a husband of Beauty Dish reader Susan, sent in this review of the Avon Clearskin Overnight Treatment:
Here's what Mark wrote:
"My wife bought me the Avon Clearskin Overnight Treatment a few months ago. I have a problem with huge zits. These are the kind of zits that people pretend not to notice when they look at you. My wife told me it was Avon or divorce! I hesitated there for a moment. Just kidding. I spread the cream on my face at night time like the product says to do. It smells like medicine a little but it's not so bad. You can't see it after you spread it on you skin. It definitely improved my zit condition. I only have a few left every now and then whereas before I had at least twenty at a time most days. I think my wife might keep me."

Today's Avon Lady helpful tip is from..... me!
This past month I had a serious medical situation that kept me from servicing my regular customers. Good thing I have collected all of my customers' emails addresses, even though I service most of them in their homes! I managed to keep my customers updated on my condition through my email list, let them know that they could order through avon.com until I was back on my feet, and that I would surprise them with a little gift when I was back to work. I called the few customers without computer access and gave them the name of another local Avon Representative who could handle any lotion emergencies. It's okay to take a break when you need one. We are all human, and most folks understand when you have an emergency.
